The movement doesn't feel slippery at all. You can't expect an engine's predecessor to be as good as it is.Īs a long time Half-Life 1 fan, a lot of the stuff here is just second nature to me. The source engine is heavily tuned, enhanced and modded (to the point of a new engine) version of the engine that ran the original Half Life (GoldSrc). I've never experienced it.Īlso, don't forget you are going backwards in time. The freezing seems to be a local issues i'm afraid.

It also allows you to hold a large number of weapons and navigate through them. However it can be cumbersome to get to the designated weapon if you're not used to it. Assault rifles (including machine gun and shotgun). Handheld explosives are bunched together.

It attempts to gather weapons together in terms of their similarity. The weapon selection is actually my favourite of all FPS's. They were made to propose a challenge to the player. There's no fear if you can one shot enemies. Subtitles weren't really a thing at the time, especially in FPS's. In terms of subtitles, don't forget that this game came about 21 years ago. I've never experienced any issues with dialogue, as long as you're within a sensible range of the NPC. In terms of game-play, it's a mechanic to get used to. This is very realistic in terms in how humans actually move about. You don't just stop walking, you quickly decelerate before you come to a halt. The slippery movement (I imagine) is meant to imitate real life. But I really wanted to enjoy as so many others have. Should I try source? Should I give up? I have completed it so I know the story now. I will say I enjoyed opposing force a lot more, it felt more streamlined early on by that point I had got the hang of things, but the big one is the movement for me, I'd land a crouch jump over acid and when I landed I just slid for another foot or so and fell in. This was especially prevalent in opposing force. Had to reload an earlier save and try the level transition 3 more times. The game had started again and I could look around and fire my weapon, but I was stuck in place.

When the game freezes to a load transition, once it loads in I could move at all. This happened maybe 5 times over the main game and opposing force. Can this be turned off in Half life 1? Maybe it's because I'm coming straight from completing ultimate doom and that's a very different speed of game. It goes assault rifle on 3, then grenades on 4 (?) then back to weapons of some kind. I find it so confusing in action to do this, and the layout confuses me a bit. I know the source games all have this where if you have say, 2 pistols, you press "2" and then click the mouse to get the pistol, or press 2 twice to get the second pistol. Weird weapon switch and weapon categories. You may have some opinions on it that change my mind. Again please don't crucify me these are just my thoughts as a new player. I notice Gordon is the same if your suit is charged, you can stand and take a lot of fire, but I feel like the combat would be more satisfying if the enemies had half the health they do, but dealt more damage. I know every game is different for time to kill but it felt weird put 8-10 rounds into a human enemies head, by contrast the aliens seem a good bit weaker. Opposing force had this too, I couldn't hear anything over the volume of the chopper at the start.īullet sponge enemies. Again I googled this to see if other people had the same experience and found very little. There appears to be slider for all sound effects in the game and at time with a lot of ambient noise I literally could not hear npcs. I found one or two other posts mentioning this from googling, but overall not much. I found minute adjustments really difficult. Just a few steps but enough to notice when you are platforming. I really struggled to keep control of Gordon at times, it's feels like when you move in a direction and stop, you continue for a little bit.
#HALF LIFE OPPOSING FORCE NOT SHUTTING PC#
Please don't roast me, I really want to like it as I loved 2 (played it first as when I first got into pc my uncle gave me a stack of discs he knew my toaster could run, HL2 was one of them) but I had a lot of struggles with this game, I'll list them and maybe some of you veterans can help.
